As a compliment to the Full Size Adirondack Chair, I have designed a Settee Kit to join 2 chairs together. This can be accomplished by building two new chairs from scratch, or joining 2 chairs that are already assembled. Simply remove the adjacent inside arms, join the chairs with 4 boards, then cut out the parts from the templates. After assembly, you will have a comfortable settee, with an extra wide center arm, and a matching lower shelf for magazines or plants. Some settee's I find too wide, and don't seem to match the rest of the chair. The slats in this kit match the size of the two seat slats on the chairs, and the curved arm pieces match the outer arms of the chairs. The front and back edges of the shelves, are also curved to match the proportions of the chairs. I have added an 8' market umbrella to my settee, which provides shade as well as protection from light rainch Plan includes Standard Chair and Settee. The downloadable instructions and templates are on Adobe Acrobat . The 1 square = 1" templates will print clearly for enlarging onto graph paper found at Staples Business Depot or most office supply stores, or you can make your own, with a roll of brown packing paper. They also include step-by-step assembly instructions, with pictures.

The next parts to prepare and attach are the arms and arm brackets. Each requires use of a pattern and should be cut on the band saw. Sand the edges as before. Additionally, the top edges of the arms should be eased using a 3⁄8” roundover bit in a router. We routed only one edge, which designates it a top. So doing will create a right and left arm so choose your edges accordingly.

Now it’s time to install the seat slats. Start at the front with the front edge overhanging the front crosspiece by about 1⁄4“. Put one screw in each end and use two screws equally spaced attaching it to the front crosspiece.
The cost of Adirondack chair kits will vary according to the type of kit, the size of the chair, and the materials used to construct the chair. Wood is the most common material used for chair construction, though composite materials are available as well to make the chair lower maintenance. Plastic chairs are also available, and these are usually lightweight and more resistant to weather damage. Higher-end wood can be used for chair construction; and these chairs will be visually appealing but much more expensive. What Is Adirondack Chair

Pine: While pine takes more maintenance than teak, it is far more affordable. This light wood slowly fades to an attractive gray. As a softwood, it’s more susceptible to dings, scratches, and, unfortunately, bugs. You’ll need to refinish it every year or two to keep the wood looking its best and to help protect it from the weather. But if upkeep doesn’t worry you and you’re on a tight budget, pine is an excellent choice.
Costco used to sell a 2 pack of Adirondack chairs with the ottomans. They’re not available on Costco.com anymore. I think you’re best bet is to check Amazon for ottomans because I’m not sure Costco will be getting new products like this since we’re in the middle of summer. Hope that helps. Good luck

Synthetic resin is one of the best materials for outside furniture. Always purchase High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) Wicker and not cheap PVC wickers. PVC synthetics will unravel, become brittle, and crack. HDPE is a much higher grade of material. If you’ve heard of bad experiences with synthetic resins, it’s probably because the furniture was made from low-quality PVC plastic. Synthetic resin wicker is very light-weight and it’s easy to clean.

If you’re looking for something durable and low maintenance, recycled plastics are a smart choice, whether it’s C.R. Plastics or Polywood. Both offer excellent warranties, with CR Plastics typically having a 10 year residential warranty and Polywood going a bit further with a 20 year residential warranty. Some recycled plastic products are so durable, they offer limited lifetime warranties.

The back slats are the first slats to make. Prepare the back slats by using the patterns for the top edges as shown in the diagram on page 41, then band saw the shapes. Both back and seat slats should have their top edges rounded over using a 1⁄4” roundover bit in a router mounted in a router table. Fan out the back pieces in their proper order to make sure you rout the correct edges.

Plastic Adirondack chairs will never need to be stained or waterproofed. However, they will need to be cleaned periodically. Be sure to avoid harsh solvents and abrasives that could scratch or harm the integrity of the plastic.

Should you decide you don’t like the color of this chair, you could consider painting it, but then you’ll have to maintain the paint. Should you want to paint, start with a high-quality exterior primer, and follow an exterior paint like Benjamin Moore’s Regal Select Low Lustre. Be sure you remove all the steel fasteners before you paint, as you don’t want to get paint on the fasteners.
Much nicer, right? But it was like putting lipstick on a pig. Paint made them look pretty, but they were still wobbly and rickety. I think we got our money’s worth out of those crappy old Adirondack chairs and now its time for something a bit sturdier and better.

These chairs can be quite comfortable, though they are often used without chair pads. The sloping seat design commonly found on Adirondack chairs, coupled with a curved back that is usually present, results in a nice, comfortable outdoor chair. The flat, wide arms always present on these chairs make it easy to rest a glass of wine upon, or perhaps just some elbows while reading a book.
To cap it off, these chairs are guaranteed under with a 20-year warranty, which always nice. Pay close attention to the hardware material, the nuts and bolts that hold everything together. You want to make sure the hardware is made from a rust resistant material such as stainless steel. Especially considering your proximity to the ocean.

Shorea: If aged wood in shades of gray and silver appeals to you, you need an Adirondack chair made of shorea. Some types of shorea start as light brown and slowly take on a soft gray if left unfinished. Shorea resists bugs and holds up well in tough weather conditions. Other wood: Less-common woods you may find include hemlock, acacia, and fir. Hemlock and acacia are hardwoods. Fir is a softwood that is occasionally used to make inexpensive Adirondack chairs. Being in the Beach area of Toronto, Bear Chairs are not uncommon on front porches. Maybe it’s just me, but I find that certain areas of the city dictate landscaping and curb acceptability. What goes as acceptable in one area, may not be perceived as in good taste in another. So although “Bear Chairs” on porches in the Beach are the norm, I haven’t seen many in Leaside, North Toronto, or the West End. In our area, these chairs are quite common on verandas and porches.
